Is it about you?

I gave a friend of mine a song of mine to remix since he heard a few of my new songs and that one he seemed drawn to in the first listen. So, I gathered the info on the song and rendered the vocal tracks as a track to be lined up and have new parts added to in this new remix. A week later I ran into the same friend and he told me he'd been working on the song and that he thought I had written the song about him and his relationship that had recently ended. I tried to explain that the song had been written long before he was even starting to have problems with his relationship and while the song was about betrayal it had nothing to do with him. I explained to him that I was touched that the message of the song was universal enough that he could related to it, it was a bit surprising that he thought that the song was about him. I guess that makes for a word of caution when you write lyrics, you never know who will or can relate and what they'll think...
