Sadly, with the dwindling attention spans these days it is important to know that you can't be everything to everyone. While you can get yourself out in front of lots of people, but keeping yourself that way is the challenge as well as how to keep connecting with them each time you interact with them.
It still amazes me how much even on the web is relationship-based. So how do you gain and keep relationships? Gaining seems to be facilitated in many cases of going through a shared experience, sometimes it's a good one and sometimes it's not, but having that connection is key. Keeping it is even more tricky as you want have a connection that is mutually beneficial and it is hard a lot of the time to figure out if that is the case and really it seems a bit disinginuine to only have relationships because of what the other person can do for you. So, it is best to do as much as you can within reason for your relationships and hopefully if you get a position you need the other person's help it doesn't seem like an imposition at all to ask...
I gave a friend of mine a song of mine to remix since he heard a few of my new songs and that one he seemed drawn to in the first listen. So, I gathered the info on the song and rendered the vocal tracks as a track to be lined up and have new parts added to in this new remix. A week later I ran into the same friend and he told me he'd been working on the song and that he thought I had written the song about him and his relationship that had recently ended. I tried to explain that the song had been written long before he was even starting to have problems with his relationship and while the song was about betrayal it had nothing to do with him. I explained to him that I was touched that the message of the song was universal enough that he could related to it, it was a bit surprising that he thought that the song was about him. I guess that makes for a word of caution when you write lyrics, you never know who will or can relate and what they'll think...
